On 2nd November, Pran Patel delivered a session entitled ‘Anti-Racism and Bias and Behaviour’. This is the third installment  in the Anti-Racist Educator Programme, this session is part of the ‘Developing a Culture of Equality’ strand of the Learn Sheffield Autumn Online Festival.

The session explored the impact of race and sub-conscious bias on behaviour within schools. Participants discussed the importance of context in terms of sanctions and dealing with behaviour issues.

The session included an activity on Personal Construct Theory and asked participants to find adjectives to describe a ‘good student’ and the direct opposites for these words. These were then ranked in order of importance. The purposed of this activity was to highlight the fact that these perceptions are subjective. There was also dialogue around cognitive bias and how early experiences can anchor perceptions, as well as discussion about how associations and stereotypes can have an impact.

There are still 4 sessions to go in this series, places can be booked through our website. Recordings of sessions that have already taken place are also available to be viewed.

This session was recorded, we look forward to sharing that with you soon. To see and access more online events as part of the Learn Sheffield Autumn Online Festival, head to our website.
