Research: Learning Behaviours
These sessions will be led by: Rob Newton and Andy Marsden
Please note by bookings on the first session you will automatically be enrolled for the whole programme (5 sessions) and joining instructions will be emailed out prior to each session.
Effective learning behaviours have emerged from the rich and diverse evidence base represented in the EEF guidance reports on improving behaviour, metacognition and self-regulation, special educational needs in mainstream schools, working with parents, and social and emotional learning.
Successful learning behaviours rely on layering all these areas to wrap around every child in our schools.
Each is part of a puzzle which makes best sense when all parts click together, building long-term protective factors for deeper learning.
Aims:
- Explore the evidence base around social and emotional learning and improving behaviour.
- Identify the areas that you intend to focus on in order to improve your school culture around learning behaviours.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of your implementation plan in order to ensure it is as effective as possible.
The programme is designed to support the development of Learning Behaviours across a school or phase. Therefore it is important that attendees are in a position in school that enables them to be able to influence change across their school – not just in their own classroom.
Please note that booking on to the first session date enrols you on the dates below. The five live sessions will be delivered 2:00-4:00pm via Zoom:
Module 1: Pre-recorded
Module 2: Session 1: 19 January 2022
Module 3: Session 2: 2 February 2022
Module 4: Pre-recorded
Module 5: Session 3: 9 March 2022
Module 6: Session 4: 30 March 2022
Module 7: Session 5: 27 April 2022
In addition to attending these live sessions there is an expectation that participants will engage in an asynchronous launch and four intersessional tasks. There will also be the opportunity for optional follow-on support. The success of the programme is as dependent on the intersessional activities as it is on the live sessions. Therefore we recommend participants calendar 90 minutes between the live dates in order to engage with these tasks successfully.
Please note by bookings on the first session you will automatically be enrolled for the whole programme (5 sessions) and joining instructions will be emailed out prior to each session.

Research: Literacy (Primary)
These sessions will be led by: Marcus Jones and Rob Newton.
Primary literacy: Literacy relies on pre-existing oral language and cognitive skills, with the extent of
involvement of these processes differing between aspects of reading and writing and at different points during development across key stages 1 and 2. This course will look at the underlying skills used in reading and writing and how the processes are related, work together, and operate in isolation. Awareness of these processes can help teachers develop thoughtful and focused pedagogy that supports children’s literacy development.
Please note that booking on to the first session date enrols you on the dates below. Sessions will be delivered 2:00-4:00pm
Module 1: Pre-recorded
Module 2: Session 1: 22 November 2021 – Understanding why speaking and listening matters, the importance of a shared language for speaking and listening and to gain a repertoire of activities to teach vocabulary.
Module 3: Session 2: 10 January 2022 – Understanding the importance of talking with children rather than just talking to children. This session will also consider strategies to enable collaborative learning.
Module 4: Session 3: 31 January 2022 – Understanding the components of reading in order to develop a balanced approach to reading that supports decoding and comprehension.
Module 5: Pre-recorded
Module 6: Session 4: 28 February 2022 – Understanding the importance of a reason to write and someone to write for (purpose and audience) and that writing is a process and each stage will require instruction and modelling.
Module 7: Session 5: 14 March 2022 – Understanding what the evidence says about the effective teaching of spelling and handwriting and a look at literacy assessment options.
Module 8: Pre-recorded
